Join the Trick or EAT food bank collection this Halloween!
Stoke Newington’s Trick or Eat Halloween campaign has collected more than 14 tonnes of food for local food banks in the past eight years.
That’s over 18,000 emergency meals for people experiencing hardship.
Now the initiative, run by the Local Buyers Club in partnership with Stoke Newington Business Association and Location Location estate agency, is back and dozens of traders and households are taking part.
On Saturday October 31st children are urged to dress up in their spookiest costumes and, while out trick or treating, deliver tins of non-perishable food to participating venues. A special map has been launched marking the donation points.
Basil Fansa, of the Local Buyers Club, said: “Halloween is huge in Hackney and Trick or Eat offers a chance to reframe things slightly – as well as having the joy of dressing up and gathering sweets, children learn about the importance of giving back and they have great fun following the map! We’re so thankful the businesses of Stoke Newington throw themselves so wholeheartedly into this!
“Each year, Trick or Eat brings in a significant amount of food for Hackney Foodbank. With food and energy costs rising sharply, I know they’re bracing themselves for a tough winter, so these food donations are sorely needed.”
Among the stores taking part are Earlybird Cards & Gifts, Stoke Newington Toy Shop, Stoke Newington Bookshop, Sapid, Jarr Market, Know and Love, Mind, Location Location, GK Locksmiths and Eyes of Stokey. Some households will also be taking part.
Lei Yang, Chair of Stoke Newington Business Association, added: “Trick or Eat is a highlight for us. We love welcoming families into our stores and offering treats in return for food bank donations. Lots of businesses make a special effort to decorate and dress up – Location Location has already revealed its amazing window display and there are usually queues outside on the night!”
