Organisers of Hackney’s Trick or Eat Trail are once again turning Halloween on its head, collecting non-perishable food for the food bank.
More than 70 businesses and households are hosting collection boxes on the afternoon/evening of Tuesday October 31st and organisers say this year donations are more needed than ever.
Participants are invited to follow the trail map – collecting sweets, while leaving tins, jars and packets of food at donation points along the way.
Jenna Fansa, of the Local Buyers Club who organises Trick or Eat, said: “This is a chance for whole neighbourhoods to get behind Hackney Foodbank and show their support. Families who’ve taken part in previous events tell us how much their children love following the trail map and finding donation boxes. Amidst the frenzy of collecting sweets at Halloween, it’s a chance to teach the children about kindness and to give something back to those who are finding things particularly tough.
“The food we collect will help support Hackney Foodbank through what threatens to be one of the toughest winters in memory.”
Last year’s Trick or Eat collected around three tonnes of food. The event is supported by Location Location estate agency and Stoke Newington Business Association.
Hackney Feedback is currently providing emergency food parcels for around 650 people and they’re expecting to feed 4,000 more mouths this winter than last.
Between January and August this year demand for Hackney Foodbank was 70% higher than during the same period last year and food donations were down 23%.
Among the businesses taking part in Trick or Eat are Location Location estate agency, Stoke Newington Book Shop, Earlybird Cards, Revere the Residence, Know and Love, Art @ Archie Foal, Nook, Prep, Hub, Dogsnug, Harvest N16, Jarr Market, Sophie MacBain, Array and many more. Dozens of households across Hackney are also taking part.
To donate £5 to Hackney Foodbank this Halloween, text BOO to 70580.
