Comedian and TV presenter Alex Zane is preparing to launch a new weekly comedy night in Stokey – with some of the country’s top names.

Squawk Comedy will take place every Tuesday downstairs at The Three Crowns, offering a chance for the UK’s best stand-ups to try out their latest material. Alex (best known for Channel 4’s ‘Rude Tube’ and ‘Balls of Steel’) will be the main host.

He said: “Comedy clubs live and die by their audience – I’m excited to be launching a comedy night but there are some nerves too!  We’ll have some big acts trying out their new material before going on tour or appearing Live at the Apollo.  I’ll be trying out some of my stuff too.

“It’s going to be two hours of hilarity!

“Because I’ve spent so long in the industry, it’s an opportunity to have some surprise guests performing – we’ll have some really big names.”

Alex studied medicine at UCL but realised in his first year that his heart was in comedy.  He launched his first comedy night at university and went on to co-present Popworld before hosting a show on NME Radio. He’s since written comedy material for The Eleven O’Clock Show and Smack the Pony.

He added: “Running my own comedy night was a pipe dream – a kernel of an idea but everything came together when I discovered The Three Crowns. It’s a really great venue and the perfect space for live comedy.”

Alex will be running the night with comedy promoter Hils Jago, who gave him his first stand-up gig in London in 1998. Lined up to perform on opening night fresh from the Edinburgh Fringe are Joe Bor and Rosie Holt as well as Kwesi Sekyi (who reached the final of the Chortle Student Comedy Awards) and acclaimed comedian Barnaby Slater.

Alex, who lives in Highgate, added: “People travel for comedy – comedians have their fans who love to come and see their new material. If they come to our club, they’ll be seeing Stoke Newington and I hope they’ll realise what a great place it is and they’ll come back. Attracting people to Stoke Newington would be a wonderful biproduct!

“I’ve spent a bit of time in Stoke Newington and love it – I love a board game (particularly the Jaws game and Pictionary) and come here to play games in Loading Bar – it’s geek heaven.”

Squawk starts at 7.30pm in the Waiting Room on Tuesday September 9th. Tickets cost just £5 and a valid ticket gives you 20% off food at The Three Crowns.
