A Winter Toy Appeal providing new gifts for children experiencing extreme hardship has issued an urgent plea for donations.
With a week to go, appeal organisers are asking the public to donate a new toy to ensure every child has a special gift to open on Christmas morning.
The appeal, run by the Local Buyers Club and Location Location estate agency, is in its 12th year. Since its launch in 2014 it has provided more than 37,000 new toys for children in poverty.
Jenna Fansa, co-founder of the Winter Toy Appeal, said: “While so many children are excitedly writing their letters to Santa, thousands in North and East London are experiencing high levels of deprivation and unlikely to receive a gift. I’d urge everyone who can to help spread a little kindness this winter.
“This year, we’re working closely with Hackney and Haringey Councils to distribute the toys to children in most need. 64% of children in Hackney and 52% of children in Haringey live in income-deprived homes. The reality of that is parents going hungry so their children can eat and families living in cold, cramped conditions. This appeal is a way to come together as a community and ensure the festive magic extends to every child.
“With less than a fortnight to go, we urgently need more donations if we’re to reach every child referred to us.”
Last year’s toy appeal reached more than 3,800 children. This year, if enough toys are collected, the appeal will reach children in Hackney, Haringey, Tower Hamlets and Barnet. Gifts are provided for children aged newborn to 18, with presents for older children in short supply.
Supporters can buy a new toy and donate it at Location Location estate agency, pop in to Stoke Newington Toys and Books to receive 20% off toy appeal purchases, order via the online wish lists or donate to a Go Fund Me. Money donated will be used to buy toys from independent stores in Hackney. Visit www.wintertoyappeal.com
