Mother’s Day Stokey-style

Updated: Apr 4, 2023

There’s no need to leave Stoke Newington this Mother’s Day – our brilliant restaurants and shops have got you covered.

By shopping local you’re helping to preserve the character of Stoke Newington - preventing the monopoly of generic chains and keeping money within the local economy.

Read on for our Mother’s Day edit.

Eating out this Mother’s Day?

You’re in for a treat at The Three Crowns. Their Head Chef Ousmane Gaye cut his teeth in some of London’s most exciting kitchens – from Holborn Dining Room and Roast to Asia de Cuba and Plaquemine Lock.

The Three Crowns was voted among London’s Top 10 by Rate Good Roasts recently. The menu includes corn-fed chicken with lemon and thyme gravy, slow roast pork belly stuffed with sage and garlic, top side beef with horseradish cream or butternut squash nut roast wellington. Why not get in there early to avoid the Mother's Day rush - Local Buyers Club members save 20% off food this Saturday and there'll be live jazz in the afternoon.

Few things could warm their hearts more than babka and bubbles! Treat Mum to brunch at the Good Egg this Sunday and they’ll receive free sparkling wine and a slice of babka. We are big fans of their Sabih: pita stuffed with fried aubergine, fudgey eggs, tahini, mango and more.

Whether you choose brunch, lunch or an evening meal, the standard is always high and the food colourful at Acoustic Brasserie. Their salads are piled high and full of flavour.

Aun offers delicious Japanese tapas and they’re open this Sunday. We recommend you try the Karaage (fried chicken) and their tempura. Their miso grilled aubergine is pretty special too.

The Guardian newspaper rated The Clarence as one of the top 30 pubs in the country for Sunday lunch and it’s easy to see why. Their three-course Mother’s Day sharing menu includes a pot-roast chicken followed by a flourless chocolate cake with rhubarb and pistachios.

Primavera also has a great menu – pasta, pizza and salads and wonderful roasts. All mums will receive a free glass of prosecco this Mother’s Day Sunday.

Cards and Gifts

First – check out Earlybird; they’ve been busy with the badge-maker and have a range of badges to match the cards. Alongside plantable cards, they offer a beautiful range by UK independent designers. They’re open till 6.30pm this Saturday in case you’re running late.

Ark N16 on the High St has a great selection of fun cards and gifts and Rude Studios offers bright cards and prints designed by the talented Abi and Rupert and Evergreen and Outrageous, Plantastic and N16 Flowers have got you covered for flowers and plants.

Why not treat your mum to a Spring Tea Ceremony or Chinese Dumpling making course at Rouge on the High St.

Sophie MacBain, Kitchen Provisions, Prep, Nook, Folka and Search and Rescue have beautiful, meaningful gifts.

Stoke Newington Bookshop’s knowledgeable team are great for recommendations.

Local potter Lesley McShea has beautiful designs to choose from – many are stocked at Know & Love,

Many of Metal Crumble’s pieces are made in-house by jeweller Roger Taylor. We love their earrings with natural stones and their bangles.

Whether it’s aromatherapy, deep tissue, sports or hot stone, Shine on Church St offers the perfect massage or facial. Why not buy a voucher and let them decide?

A beautiful collection of clothes by independent British designer Sideline is selling like hotcakes at Hub. And Archie Foal have lovely womenswear too.

So you see – there’s really no need to go anywhere! The forecast is rain – snuggle up in your favourite pub or restaurant and treat your mum to a locally-bought card and gift!
